Travel Awakenings

I was fortunate to stay at the Three Abbey Green while in Bath, just a quick walk around the corner to the Abbey. I saved the Abbey toward the end of my time in Bath as a place to find peace before continuing my journey. I took time to admire the outside structure and take in its magnitude before venturing in the large wooden doors.  I was impressed by the magnitude of this place as well as the incredible workmanship. I am always amazed when I see plaques and graves in a church, knowing that only the wealthiest in the community are represented.  I sat there for a time admiring the large organ, imaging what it was like to be played centuries ago. I immersed myself in the moments that I was amidst this beauty. In addition to stepping back in time in this grand place, I had the fortunate experience of visiting the Abbey while one of the spiritual leaders performed a mock baptism for a couple of disabled children. I arrived at the Roman Baths a little after 9am, greeted by the friendly staff with warm smiles. I was tickled to see a grand dad standing in front of me with a young man no older than 6. I said good morning and he shared that he was showing the lad the history of this grand little city. I paid my entry and made my way to the place where they provide the headsets for self-guided touring. I was impressed that they had a special version of the tour for those little ones, keeping them engaged as they educated.  I meandered slowly through each part of this moment to history in awe of the structures as I listened to the narration. I closed my eyes and was taken back centuries, putting myself in the sandals of the Romans who would use these bathes as part of their social outlet, meeting, greeting and conducting business conversations. It was 5am and I found myself wide awake here in Bath. My sleep was so restful in the Elinor Dashwood room of the Three Abbey Green accommodations. By 6, I decided to take a walk around the town while tourist and resident alike where still fast asleep.  I took out my trusty map and plotted a course that would get me back in time for a well prepared English breakfast.   I strolled up the main road, making a left by St. Michaels.   It seemed as if only the birds were awake at  this hour as the sun was still low in the sky. I meandered through the side streets, coming up on the Circus, an impressive grand circle of row homes fashioned around a small round park, a huge tree its centerpiece. I stood there for a few moments admiring the architecture before making my way to the Royal Cres and Royal Victoria Park.  The park was green and lush with benches along the main pathways. As I exited the train at Bath Spa, I heard the distant sound of birds of the sea. ‘Gulls here?’ I thought. I had no idea that these sea faring fowl had taken up residence by the towns canals situated about 30 miles from the sea. It was a few blocks to the hotel where I would rest my head on a real pillow, laying on the first real bed I had seen in the last 36 hours.  The flight from the US to Heathrow was comfortable, but it was a welcome site when I would checked into my nights lodging. Three Abbey Green was an upscale B&B located in a secluded cobblestone courtyard, around the corner from Bath Abbey.
