Christmas on the Road

When I travel solo, it's for months at a time. It began in the 1990's to places like Europe, Mexico, Central and South America. I would schedule my long trips around my tech gig downtimes, ensuring that I was at mom's for the holiday.  My travel over major holidays started after my parents passed away about a dozen years ago. I can tell you that this is not the same as getting on a plane to go to your mom's house across the country. When you travel for months at a time, you learn to avoid the business travel days and do not budge during the holiday week.

I've spent Christmas in the Amazon, Central America, South America and Mexico. I think you can see the trend here with me opting for warm climates where I can swim and soak in the culture of some of these out of the ordinary places.  I will point out that I also try and connect to volunteer opportunities while in these locales.

When I travel, it's typically with a backpack, finding my people in local accommodations over American style resorts. These are other open hearted solo travelers.

I am still laughing out loud when I think about Jay, a fellow I met in an out-of-the-way place in Cozumel. The 15 people at the pool were all laughing out loud as he jogged into the courtyard of the motel with a Mahi Mahi under his arm, spouting, "Where's the chef."  It was a moment that I will never. Dinner was cooked on the BBQ with beer or wine, followed by a beach bonfire.

I've celebrated Christmas eating Piranha in the Amazon, Tamales in San Jose Del Cabo while volunteering with a local church, and a Churrascaria while volunteering for 6 months at a spiritual center  in the middle of nowhere South America. I was alone, but never felt lonely. It's a code that fellow solo travelers share as we find each other for the holiday. It has always been a fabulous time.

The only thing missing was the family drama. How many of you can say that!  Thanks "Guys" for saving me from all that insignificant nonsense.

Enjoy your spiritual travel and wishing you amazing Travel Awakenings,
