Air Travel for the Spiritually Conscious and Budget Minded

I travel a lot, both in my career as well as when I'm off assignment and volunteering.
On assignments, like the one in 2017, I flew to Boston every week. It is nothing to spend several thousand dollars on airfare for a last minute flight only to turn around and have to change it. This causes huge fees, but when you are traveling for work, it's not on your dime.

When traveling for spiritual development and having to pay for airline tickets out of my own pocket, however,  I use all avenues to save cash by utilizing a couple of techniques.

Airline Credit Cards
The credit cards that I have are all tied to some airline points system. You'd be surprised how fast points add up until you have enough for a free ticket. Most offer incentives like enough points for at least one round trip on sign up for that card. Many offer different classes of service with super saver specials when redeeming miles on less used flights to fill up the aircraft.

Airline Flight Classes
Some airlines offer more than one economy class type tickets. If your plans are set and can travel light, then you can take advantage of these discounted rates.

Being Flexible
There are a couple of types of flexible flight scheduling:
  • If you can have flexible plans, then you can take advantage of the best time of year and rate to fly in and out of a particular city of interest.
  • Consider booking on the best days of the week to fly: Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Don't make the mistake of traveling on a Sunday.
  • I travel with a go with the flow attitude and agenda, so I arrive to a place and don’t have a clue when or where I will end up before I travel back home.  Luckily, some airlines like United and American allow you to book one way segments using award miles, making last minute reservations into one city and out of another easier.
Traveling while outside the US
The amazing thing about traveling within places like South America and Europe, unlike the US, their local airlines have huge discounts for last minute travel.  I either make my reservation the day before or just walk into the counter at the airport and buy a ticket to fly that same day on the cheap.

The key is to book that flight when you are actually in that country, since the rates are higher if you book them from the US.

I flew from Dublin to Bremen Germany for $35 euros on Ryaniar on a 1 day advance reservation. The flight was fine and I laughed at the bright yellow seat backs and the fact that the flight attendants  sold scratch-offs during the flight.

Just remember that if you are willing to be flexible. you can take advantage of these tips and find specials as you enjoy the journey.
