Berlin - CheckPoint Charlie

2015: You can say a lot about the place where the Berlin Wall stood, now not more than a tourist attraction visited, I'm sure by millions. Although I arrived too late to visit the Checkpoint Charlie museum, I did spend time at this remembrance, sitting with a cappuccino at Einstein's Kaffee, watching all the tourists. It was a great place at the high back stools at the window counter, providing a birds-eye view of the checkpoint and tourists. All and all, I was not too impressed and kept waiting for a sign of something more significant. It came in the form of a small collisions with a young man. When I apologized in English, he smiled and said "No it was my fault." It was in that moment that I was spurred to ask a question about the Berlin Wall.

The tidbit he shared was not in any guide book and I was grateful to receive it from a perfect stranger, a local.

I knew that the wall was most probably close to the checkpoint and I was right, although I could not see it anywhere. This young man graciously walked me to the very spot, just a few steps from that coffee shop by Checkpoint Charlie where small cobblestones lay in a row with an accompanying plaque that said, in German, that this is part of the remains of the Berlin Wall.

It was amazing that most people missed this important piece of history. If I was not a coffee fiend and would have been 1 minute earlier or later getting in line for a refill, I would have missed the collision with this stranger who was getting some take away caffeine.

As I looked down, I got an idea, I straddled either side of the remains of the wall. I could feel the energy, imagining what it would have been like living in Germany at the time. My heart went out to those who lived in this area during such strife and turmoil, potentially separated from their loved ones.

I asked a kind stranger to snap a photo, because you know, it's not often that you get to say that you've been in 2 places at once. Today was my day, and I accomplished this feat without the use trick photography or dimensional portals. I think it's this feature that makes visiting the checkpoint worth while, so don't miss it.

While in Berlin I also talk about the train system, my lodging, and a few other tidbits, so look for those posts in this series.
